GLORIAD Working Groups

The following lists a set of working groups that have been established for GLORIAD:

GLORIAD Active Measurement Working Group *

The GLO-AMP working group is established for coordinating activities between the GLORIAD community and the Active Measurement Group based in San Diego and New Zealand. An important component of the GLORIAD measurement activity is deploying a mesh of AMP machines across the GLORIAD infrastructure with the intention of creating a mesh of measurement nodes between all AMP devices within the GLORIAD partner countries, thereby providing good active measurement data across the GLORIAD infrastructure.

GLORIAD Astronomical Sciences Working Group *

The GLO-AST Working Group is established to help identify major astronomy facilities and their constituent networking (and broader cyberinfrastructure) requirements to ensure relevant service to the astronomy community.

GLORIAD Atmospheric Sciences Working Group *

The GLO-ATM Working Group is established to help identify major resources, networking and broader cyber infrastructure requirements related to atmospheric sciences and focused on the primary partnering GLORIAD countries.

GLORIAD Audit & Management Working Group Listserver *

The GLO-AUD working group is established to assist the executive working group (and other working groups) establish goals, plans for reaching the goals and processes for evaluating progress towards their achievement. This group may also assist the GLORIAD program develop a good overall management strategy and governance process that works in a rather challenging international context.

GLORIAD Central Asia Working Group *

The GLO-CA Working Group is established to help coordinate discussion and planning for GLORIAD connectivity into Central Asia. There is strong interest throughout the GLORIAD community in establishing better science and education infrastructure within and to/from Central Asia.

GLORIAD Classroom Working Group *

The GLO-CLS Working Group is established to help manage the “GLORIAD classroom” community building information service promised as part of the GLORIAD proposal to the US NSF. The “GLORIAD Classroom” provides subscribers and users with a service with which to stay current about new developments use of advanced networking and other technologies. This will be accomplished through the GLORIAD web site and via a flexible "current awareness" service by which new information added and curated each day is made available to subscribers based on their own specified interests - via email alerts as well as personalized web pages.

GLORIAD Collaboration Infrastructure Working Group Listserver *

The GLO-COL working group is established to coordinate the development of a GLORIAD-wide collaboration infrastructure – tools, technologies and training to enable scientists, educators and students to more easily communicate and collaborate across the network. These will include VRVS, H323 video conferencing, Apple iChat, IP Telephony, etc. The group will help evaluate and document different solutions and experiences of with these tools/technologies, and share the information via the GLORIAD website.

GLORIAD Computational Sciences Working Group *

The GLO-COM working group is established to develop a good information base on the general issue of access to shared computing resources, to inform the GLORIAD team of relevant network requirements and architecture issues, and to address middleware issues critical to remote access to computing facilities.

GLORIAD Corporate Relations Working Group Listserver *

The GLO-COR working group is established to focus on developing relationships with the corporate sector and to ensure that corporate partners are fully involved and engaged in GLORIAD activities – and in a manner supportive of the science, educational and cultural exchange objectives of the program.

GLORIAD Edu-Cultural Channel Working Group Listserver *

The GLO-ECC working group is established to coordinate development of the GLORIAD Edu-Cultural Digital Television Channel by which educational and cultural content is to be developed and provided via the new ECC service. This group must also address digital video technologies and technologies required for running and managing the video services.

GLORIAD Engineering Architecture & Services Working Group *

The GLO-ENG working group is established to coordinate communication among GLORIAD network architects and engineers related to the overall architecture and set of services GLORIAD is to provide. The focus of this group is more on overall architecture and engineering, rather than operations, which is handled by the GLO-NOC group.

GLORIAD Executive Board Listserver *

The GLO-EXE working group is to serve the GLORIAD program by establishing general direction and policy, identifying necessary resources to support program operation, facilitating regular meeting and communication among the various GLORIAD partners, coordinating relationship building with the various government, public and private organizations involved in GLORIAD, and resolving any disputes and conflicts that may arise within the GLORIAD community. The composition of the executive working group is the leadership of GLORIAD in each of the partnering countries.

GLORIAD Fundraising Working Group Listserver *

The GLO-FUN working group is established to help identify financial and other resources to support the GLORIAD program. A special effort of this group will be on identifying and summarizing funding opportunities which are to be shared via the "GLORIAD classroom". Another activity will be establishing relationship with funding organizations to explore resources to help in running programs and in establishing better infrastructure (both international and domestic) and in general, helping the overall GLORIAD effort realize its goals.

GLORIAD General Monitoring Activity Working Group *

The GLO-MON working group is established to coordinate activities related to GLORIAD network monitoring program - including overall network uptime, network utilization, network performance (active and passive measurement) and security event detection and response. Other working groups will focus in more detail on specific areas (such as active measurement, security event monitoring, etc.).

GLORIAD High Definition Stream TV Working Group *

The GLO-HTV working group is established to coordinate activities among GLORIAD partners dealing with the issue of high definition video streaming, and to inform the broader GLORIAD community about developments, opportunities and technologies related to streaming video, and to help inform the GLORIAD team of network resource requirements and any requirements that might impact and affect the general architecture of GLORIAD.

GLORIAD High Energy Physics Working Group  *

The GLO-HEP Working Group is established to help identify major resources, networking and broader cyber infrastructure requirements related to high energy physics and focused on the primary partnering GLORIAD countries. The goal is to help the GLORIAD team insure that the needs of the HEP community are taken into account for resource planning and service delivery.

GLORIAD i-Grid 2005 Working Group Listserver *

The purpose of this working group is to help organize and showcase applications running on the GLORIAD network during the i-Grid 2005 event being organized September 26-29, 2005 in San Diego, California.

GLORIAD ITER/Fusion Energy Working Group  *

The GLO-ITR Working Group is established to help identify major resources, networking and broader cyber infrastructure requirements related to the ITER program. The goal is to help the GLORIAD team ensure that the needs of the community are taken into account for resource planning and service delivery purposes.

GLORIAD Local Infrastructure Development Working Group Listserver *

The primary purpose of this group will be to survey efforts within each partnering GLORIAD country (and elsewhere) to document domestic infrastructure issues and to help guide GLORIAD network architecture and engineering discussions and plans. Another activity of this group will be looking in more detail at very localized infrastructure development issues, such as how communities are mobilizing their own efforts to acquire dark fiber assets to deploy the next generation of advanced networks and services.

GLORIAD Medical/Health Sciences Working Group *

The GLO-MED Working Group is established to help identify major resources, networking and broader cyber infrastructure requirements related to medical/health sciences and focused on the primary partnering GLORIAD countries. As with all discipline-specific working groups, a key initial goal is to draft a resource requirements report describing major facilities and their network status and needs, key individuals within the discipline community, and a general timeline describing network resource requirements. The goal is to help the GLORIAD team ensure that the needs of the community are taken into account for resource planning and service delivery purposes.

GLORIAD Network Operations Center Working Group *

The GLO-NOC working group is established to coordinate activity among the GLORIAD team in operating the distributed Network Operations Center. A key initial activity will be on improving and refining the GLORIAD shared trouble ticketing system.

GLORIAD Nuclear Non-Proliferation Working Group *

The GLO-NNP Working Group is established to help identify major resources, networking and broader cyber infrastructure requirements related to cooperation within the nuclear non-proliferation community and focused on the primary partnering GLORIAD countries. The goal is to help the GLORIAD team ensure that the needs of the community are taken into account for resource planning and service delivery purposes.

GLORIAD Public Relations Working Group *

The GLO-PR working group is established to coordinate activities related to ensuring good public relations with media and other information organizations. This group is also responsible for developing better web presence, attractive and informative brochures and posters and, in general, ensuring appropriate, interesting and attractive information about GLORIAD.

GLORIAD Security Working Group Listserver *

The GLO-SEC working group is established to coordinate development of policy, procedures and activities related to network security for the GLORIAD network.

GLORIAD Simple Words Working Group Listserver *

The GLO-SW working group is established to develop an international Simple Words program based on the very successful Simple Words essay contest and program in Russia, and initiated by Academician Evgeny Velikhov. Initial activity of this working group will be to prototype the already-existing Simple Words software for collecting and managing essays and survey material for the Simple Words contest in a number of smaller communities. This group will also help inform policy development, fundraising activity and overall project management for the Simple Words program.
