Geosciences
Consisting of the study of nearly everything to do with the earth including land, water, air, interior of the earth, and the atmosphere, there are many world-class earth science problems already benefiting from US-Russia-China cooperation. Many of the problems involve enormous data transfers of remotely sensed data -from SeaWiFS and MODIS for example. Problems being addressed (with benefit from much greater network capacity) include climate change in context of carbon flux, seismic monitoring and earthquake prediction, forestry and wildfire studies sponsored by the RAS and NASA. Particularly for the US community, GLORIAD aims to provide access to secluded scientific centers such as the remote Seismic Research Station in Bishkek.
- 2D and 3D Deformation Field over Bishkek Proving Ground Developed on the base of the GPS(Project proposed to start)(GeoScience)
- The BPG covers the Kirgizian Tien Shan and adjacent areas. The Tien Shan, due to its modern geodynamic activity, is a natural geological laboratory and the scientific community can observe not only static pattern but also temporal changes here.The data is so large that combined analysis of the whole set demands new geoinformatic technologies and different approaches. - Climate Change
- Global climate change is of huge importance to governments as they must make resource allocation and planning decisions that have global impact and policy implications.
- Climate Issues
- The topographical variations in the Russia to China region give rise to enormous extremes of weather, resulting in floods (China especially), fires (Russia and Central Asia), dust storms (Aral Sea, Mongolia, China) and many other weather disasters. Distribution of Climate data via GLORIAD could provide assistance in disaster planning related to these weather extremes.
- Cold & Arid Climate Research
- Cold and Arid Regions Research focuses on the exploration of the land surface process, structure and interaction in cold and arid regions, the study of the regional environmental changes and global climate changes, and the affect on these regions of important engineering projects and sustainable development.
- Development of a Scientific Infrastructure for the International Research Center – Geodynamic Proving Ground in the Bishkek City (IRC-GPG) (Project in progress)(GeoScience)
- The project covers a support of the International Research Center – Geodynamic Proving Ground in
Bishkek (IGRC) activities, including the development of the IGRC scientific infrastructure and creation of the Multiuser Geoscience Facility System (MGFS) under IGRC.
- Discrete VS.Continious Continental Deformation and the Role of the Lower Crust in the Tien Shan (Project in progress)(GeoScience)
- The principal objective of the project is to collect observations that will allow us to address some key questions on the role of the lower crust in intraplate shortening, and in the larger picture
of discrete vs. continuous deformation.
- Environmental Protection
- Much can be done via GLORIAD to share technologies and procedures that can help solve apparently unsolvable environmental problems.
- Exploitation of the Kyrgyz seismic network by International Research (Project in progress)(GeoScience)
- The basic purpose of the project is to prolong operation of KNET on
the present high level of quality and data availability (not less than 95 %), keeping
up of existing pattern of service of the network and data transfer.
- Gloriad Applications - Tectonics
- Tectonics is the study of the large-scale crustal history of movements and deformations of the exterior plates of the Earth.
- Homeland Security
- GLORIAD's segmented architecture and high-bandwidth availability provide the US, Russia and China with a network that can perform during times of major disaster, or more importantly, prior to such disasters when measures can be taken to use sensor networks, intelligence systems, and computational and visualization power to prevent or reduce the impact.
- KOREA: Geophysics
- Volcano/Atmospheric Interaction
- Interactions of the atmosphere with the land and water are just being unraveled as the extent and chemistry of volcanic eruptions in Siberia is being studied through time.
- Water
- One of the absolute needs for all people is clean drinking water as well as water for farming and waste treatment. Fiber networks such as GLORIAD could help link these governments to information on to develop, purify and maintain water resources that are similarly important in the west, but which have been solved in many ways.
