Project: Open Bioinformatics Grid

Description: OBIGrid is a nationwide Japanese system based on the Globus Toolkit and VPN networking. Wide area connections were established in June 2002 between JAIST, Riken-GSC, and Tokushima University. Since September 2002, the grid is being expanded with 16 companies, 2 governmental institutes, and 7 universities. Simultaneously, a software distribution is in preparation, to group both grid-specific and bioinformatics-related in a single package. Finally, several important system development projects are being discussed, such as the migration (and integration) of various genome databases, or the implementation of grid-enabled popular bioinformatics software tools. These projects are in cooperation with the Grid Consortium Japan (http://www.jpgrid.org).
