Project: Petascale Data Quest (PDQ)

Description: The NCSA Alliance Expedition ÒA PACI Petascale Data QuestÓ (PDQ) aims to achieve the technical advances, technology deployment, and application integration required to enable data-intensive applications to harness Alliance and TeraGrid resources, thus transforming these systems from potential Grid resources into demonstrably effective Grid powerhouses. Data Grid technologies are being developed by various projects within the U.S. and internationally, and applied within various application domains. However, these developments and deployments have not yet been translated into production quality PACI infrastructure. To achieve this transition, we need to (a) deploy and maintain key Data Grid services on Alliance resources and then (b) interface the resulting Data Grid to realistic, large-scale applications, while also (c) extending Data Grid services as required to meet Alliance deployment and application requirements. In addition to the direct benefits to the specific applications targeted by this work, these two synergistic activities will have a broad and significant impact on the practice of computational science via the creation of new infrastructure (deployed Data Grid services, and also tools) and evaluation of, and subsequent improvement to, Data Grid technologies based on large-scale experimentation.
