Professor Jiang Mianheng, a native of Shanghai, graduated from Fudan University, Shanghai, in 1977, and first worked for a semiconductor device research institute in Shanghai. He received his Master of Science degree in 1982, and afterward joined the Shanghai Institute of Metallurgy, another research institute affiliated with the Academy.
In 1986, he went to the United States to pursue his Ph.D. Program at Drexel University, Philadelphia. His research interests centered on high transition temperature superconductor materials. He was awarded his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1991. Then he moved from the East Coast to join Hewlett-Packard Company in Palo Alto, California, where he worked until his return to China in 1993.
Upon his return, Dr. Jiang rejoined the Shanghai Institute of Metallurgy. Since then, his activities have ranged from promoting research commercialization to the administrative management of the Institute. In 1997 he was appointed president of the Institute. While remaining at his position as president of the Shanghai Institute of Metallurgy, Dr. Jiang was also appointed vice president, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing in November 1999. He is responsible for the high-tech related research and development from within the Academy. He also serves on several boards of directors including China Netcom Company (CNC), Shanghai Automotive Industry Company (Group), Shanghai Airport Group Company, etc.
