KREONET/KREONet2/SuperSIReN
KREONET (Korea Research Environment Open NETwork) is a national R&D network, run by KISTI (Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information) and supported by Korean government, in particular MOST (Ministry Of Science & Technology) since 1988. For science and technology information exchange and supercomputing related collaboration, KREONET provides high-performance network services for Korean research and development community. Currently KREONET member institutions are over 200 organizations, which include government research institutes, major universities, industrial research laboratories, and etc.KREONET has 12 regional network centers, each of which has a GigaPOP. These GigaPOPs are linked to each other with a bandwidth of 2.5/5Gbps. In order to encourage international research collaboration and remote education, KREONET installed two direct international connections to U.S. (NSFNET/CERFNet) and to EU (EuroPaNet) in 1991 and 1994, which was one of the turning points for KREONET’s growth. Now KREONET has several direct links to foreign countries such as U.S. (StarLight, 1.2Gbps) and China (Chinese Academy of Science/CNIC, CSTNet, 155Mbps). These international links support collaborations and information exchanges among research institutes and universities of the countries involved.

[KREONET Backbone]
Major engineering services are Multicast, QoS, IPv6, Traffic Measurement, Globus Middleware, and Web Cashing, which are being supported by KREONET NOC (Network Operation Center) and NEC (Network Engineering Center).
KREONET is now being upgraded to the KREONet2, next generation research network, to which NGI and Grid technologies are applied through interconnection with StarLight. We have used KREONet2 as Grid High-Performance Network, which processes large data on supercomputers and activates world-class collaborative applied services.
Moreover, in order to support R&D of Grid and supercomputing applications, it is being constructed Grid-based high-performance research network (SuperSIReN) at speed 10Gbps centering around major universities and governmental research institutes in Daedeok Science Valley. SuperSIReN is the high-performance regional network in Daedeok science town. In 2003, the first stage was successfully deployed, which is connecting the seven research institutes and universities with high bandwidth (10~40Gbps). It has used and will be used for grid/e-Science application researches and Grid networking testbed. It will enhance the collaborations between research institutes and universities.
Now SuperSIReN is used for applications such as seismological observation, genome information, unmanned aerial vehicles development, high voltage electron microscope, etc. SuperSIReN NOC are testing and applying the networking technologies such as IPv6, QoSAS (QoS Allocation System), AMP (Active Measurement Project), FlowScan+, NetWRAP (NetWork Resource Abuse Preventive) system and multicast monitoring system.
In the near future, we will evolve the present gigabit-Ethernet based network to lambda network and deploy the second stage network.
