Korea: Research activities on advanced network engineering technologies

Network Measurement and Monitoring
KISTI has deployed AMP(Active Measurement Project), FlowScan+, PingER (Ping End-to-end Reporting) and so on, and those tools have monitored and analyzed the various statistics of the main regional network centers of KEONET/KREONET2, STAR TAP/StarLight link, and Supercomputing users.

AMP KREONET is to measure network performance among KREONET users, supercomputer users, and Grid application developers (currently 16 sites available). It is an independent mesh-like network located at KISTI/Supercomputing Center, technically supported by NLANR/MNA. The data collected by AMP KREONET is a valuable resource for network analysis to study the network and derive performance models for various aspects of Internet traffic. We will expand AMP to Asia area, hoping to be the first and largest active measurement infrastructure in Asia.

FlowScan is a passive measurement tool generating traffic graphs by analyzing network flows made by routers and switches. It was developed by Dave Plonka (a number of the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) of University of Wisconsin-Madison), and managed by CAIDA (the Cooperative Association for Internet Data Analysis). KISTI have developed a new version of FlowScan since 2001, that is FlowScan+. KISTI added DB module, intensive visualization, user-friendly query interfaces, flow-tools to enable Netflow v7 and various analysis options such as user groupings. It has been successfully measuring traffic between KOREN/KREONet2 and STAR TAP until June 2004 (After then monitoring Star Light). Also it is measuring the supercomputing traffic of KISTI and SuperSIReN traffic.

PingER is the name given to the Internet End-to-end Performance Measurement (IEPM) project to monitor end-to-end performance of Internet links. The project now involves hundreds of sites in many countries all over the world. We have deployed PingER on KREONET/KREONET2 user sites. Those shows the recent traffic connectivity, long term traffic graphs and detailed traffic analysis between KISTI and KREONET sites
