Comprising the same group that has worked with the US team to build the NaukaNet and Little GLORIAD programs, the Russian team is a whos who of Russias most senior scientists and Internet developers. Academician Evgeny Velikhov, President of the Russian Research Center Kurchatov Institute (a special nationwide laboratory reporting to the Russian Prime Minister) heads the Russian team. Dr. Velikhov also holds the titles of Academician-Secretary of the Russian Academy of Sciences (in charge of one of the 8 branches, Computing and Information Technologies - similar in scope and mission to the NSF CISE Directorate). Additionally, he is a long-time proponent and activist for improved US-Soviet (and, later US-Russian) S&E relations. Dr. Velikhovs very active leadership has yielded a powerful consortium of Russian Ministries and science organizations to support not only the international component of GLORIAD but the domestic Russian component responsible for domestic network improvements to make effective use of the international network.
Leading the Russian telecommunications team is Dr. Alexey Soldatov, Research Director of the RRC Kurchatov Institute and pioneer in the development of the Russian Internet, Dr. Alexei Platonov, Executive Director of the Russian Institute for Public Networking (RIPN) and head of the Russia Backbone Network (RBnet) -- Russias primary S&E backbone network connecting science and educational institutions across the entire territory of Russia, with an operational staff of 50 and connecting 45 regional S&E networks in Russia.
