GLORIAD Education and Outreach Activities

At its core, GLORIAD connects communities, be they scientists, educators or students, by operating an advanced, stable and robust network infrastructure to better support collaborations. The program is just as focused on expanding quantity and quality of collaborative opportunities - believing that broader exposure to Science and Education (S&E) programs in Russia and China promises direct benefit for the US S&E community, and vice versa.

The political realities of the last century between the US, Russia and China have not only hindered many S&E ties, but in many cases have actively prevented them. Education and Outreach (E&O) activities present the GLORIAD team with an enormous opportunity to promote better knowledge and understanding of S&E resources, institutions, facilities and funding opportunities characterizing new avenues for cooperation. The team plans to leverage its operation of the primary advanced network infrastructure to build and sustain this E&O effort.

The GLORIAD management team believes so strongly in E&O activity that the organization's Advisory Board is tasked with:

  • identifying relevant new content for the curated repository;
  • identifying interesting video content for the EduCultural Channel component; and,
  • assisting in staging regular events (video sessions, or text-based chat interviews, etc.) related to educating the GLORIAD communities about interesting technologies, successful applications, future trends and legal/policy issues.

A listing of different EOT programs and activities follows:

GLORIAD Classroom
The GLORIAD classroom serves as a large curated information clearinghouse with services made accessible via a dynamically generated, multi-lingual, browser independent web interface, and extended search methods. Additionally, the Classroom notifies users of new content through a flexible “current awareness” service by which new information added and curated each day is made available to subscribers based on their own specified interest/s and disseminated via a user-defined, personalized web interface, as well as by email alerts.

GLORIAD Collaboration Infrastructure
Through its work with the VRVS team and its development of an IP telephony infrastructure, GLORIAD aims to enable scientists, educators and students to talk. The Collaboration Infrastructure is the program by which video and audio-conferencing technologies are deployed and users trained for real-time collaboration.

GLORIAD Educultural Channel
The goal of the EduCultural Channel - a 24/7 streaming video service - is to broker content (and in cases, stage and develop content) making “high-end” science applications utilizing the GLORIAD network understandable and accessible to the general public and to young people.

GLORIAD Junior Achievement Partnership
Junior Achievement's interest in GLORIAD centers on its ability to provide an advanced network service to enable young people in the US, Russia and China (and beyond) to engage in its various business development programs, shared lectures, and joint educational programs related to international business development.

GLORIAD Simple Words
Simple Words is a global essay contest for young people pioneered in Russia by GLORIAD leader EP Velikhov. Simple Words introduces young people in the GLORIAD countries by enabling them to share their thoughts via on-line submitted essays about certain “Simple Words” (core human concepts such as, faith, hope, love, death, friends, war), and then providing a structured setting, teacher-supervised, to discuss their thoughts and opinions.

GLORIAD Virtual Science Museum of China
The Virtual Science Museum of China is an enormous undertaking of GLORIAD-China partners, Computer Network Information Center, to provide high quality content about scientific subjects - in a manner appealing to students of all ages. It now comprises of 60 separate on-line museums available for on-line browsing.
